Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn? Mapping Your Response

We often judge ourselves for our survival responses. We think we are “weak” for shutting down or “too aggressive” for getting angry. But your nervous system has only one job: To keep you alive.

The 4 F’s of Survival

  1. Fight: Irritability, anger, controlling behavior.
  2. Flight: Anxiety, perfectionism, over-working.
  3. Freeze: Numbness, scrolling paralysis, disassociation.
  4. Fawn: People-pleasing, lack of boundaries, over-apologizing.

None of these are “bad.” They are brilliant adaptations that helped you survive difficult environments. The goal of therapy isn’t to eliminate them, but to teach your body that the war is over, so you don’t have to use these heavy shields anymore.
